TITLE: Technician                                                      PLANT: Federal                                            

DEPARTMENT: Tool Room                                      REPORTS TO:  Lead or Supervisor 

FLSA STATUS: Hourly/Non-exempt                         PAY GRADE: Level dependent 13-18




Maintain and repair tooling while supporting all departments to provide quality die castings for customers.  Safely perform all tasks required to meet safety and production goals while maintaining a 7S system, participating in continuous improvement and supporting team members.

Team members responsible for personal development and progression of skill levels through Level 4 of their home department. Level 5 candidates will be selected by management.  Team members required to become proficient at minimum in two other departments.

Level 5 – Team Leader/SME/Trainer

  • Supervisor in training
  • Subject matter expert in all aspects
  • Model of Gibbs ideal Team Member
  • Lead continuous improvement teams and activities
  • Train and monitor training activities
  • Lead production activities required to meet production goals

Level 4 – Self Directed

  • Level 5 candidate
  • Performs job autonomously (Operator preventative maintenance, production processes, setups, minor repairs, cleaning, production trouble shooting, resolve quality issues)
  • Complete all previous internal level and external training requirements
  • Journeyman status
  • Exhibits Gibbs team member values
  • Train or monitor training activities

Level 3 - Proficient

  • Level 4 candidate
  • Operate equipment independently (Operator preventative maintenance, production processes, quality, inspection, setup)
  • Actively pursue training towards Level 4 completion within one year of reaching Level 3
  • All level 2 training complete.
  • Capable of all tool repair.
  • Train as requested

Level 2Functional

  • Level 3 candidate
  • Capable of operating casting and trim press as required
  • Apprentice status
  • Training - Perform routine maintenance on casting and trim dies
  • Training - Tears down dies for maintenance
  • Training - Sets up and operators machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, shaper and grinder to machine parts.
  • Training - Verifies component specifications
  • Training - Uses stone tools to repair pins
  • Training - Performs general welding for repairs and maintenance
  • Training – use sand blaster and steam cleaner

Level 1 – Entry

  • Level 2 candidate
  • Actively pursue training towards Level 2 completion within six months of reaching Level 1
  • Follow all aspects of Safety as described in GDC Safety Roles and Expectations.
  • Follows all prescribed safety regulations including the proper use of all required personal protective equipment.
  • Follow all IATF 16949 and ISO 14001 guidelines.
  • Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition according to established Gibbs 7-S Guidelines.
  • Performs any activities Lead or Supervisor asked as training or trained outside Job description
  • Able to work weekends and overtime as required


To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education, knowledge, skills and abilities:

Education:  High school diploma or general education degree (GED).  

Certifications:  Apprentice and Journeyman for level attainment.

Experience: Manufacturing experience preferred, particularly experience in an automotive supplier, hot and changing environment and/or with casting, melt or metal forming.  Preferred but not required machine shop background and apprentice status or willingness to attain this status

Communication: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other team members of the organization.  Function as part of a team.

Math: Ability to perform basic math, addition, subtraction, division and multiplication in whole numbers, or complete training required for math and math application.

Computer Skills: Should have basic computer and Internet knowledge or be willing to complete training as needed.

Other:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to work with a cross functional team to find solutions to production issues.  Willing to constantly learn and apply knowledge learned to meet production and improve efficiency

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, and other Required Training: Willingness to obtain Fork Truck certification or tugger training.
