TITLE: Process Automation Engineer                                    PLANT: Corporate

DEPARTMENT: Process Engineering                                   REPORTS TO: Process Engineering Team Leader

FLSA STATUS: Exempt                                                       




Specify the equipment, materials, and methods required for machine control systems integration projects.  Design and document all technical specifications such as wiring and IO diagrams, PLC logic, robotics programming, and control panel layouts.  Plan for and lead the installation and startup of new equipment, equipment upgrades, and continuous improvement equipment modifications.

  • Provide the technical expertise required for machine integration, installation, debugging and troubleshooting.
  • Ensure that installations and modifications perform as expected, and are completed within the required schedule.
  • Design and develop HMI applications.
  • Create and modify PLC and robotics programs.
  • Configure I/O for Fanuc and ABB robotics.
  • Ensure technical information is distributed to maintenance and operations as required to support new installations, upgrades, or modifications.
  • Lead Engineer of automation equipment for casting/finishing operations.
  • Lead concept development of automation for new programs or new processes.    
  • Lead automation equipment and integrations training development for manufacturing and maintenance personnel.
  • Champion/Coordinate automation efforts with Engineering and Maintenance Groups.
  • Lead/Support continuous improvement efforts to reduce scrap, increase uptime, and decrease cycle time.
  • Lead/Support completion of root cause analysis for failures, assist in developing problem solving teams, and often champion corrective/preventive actions using formal methodologies (i.e. 8-D, Shanin, Six Sigma, Critical Thinking, 5-Why principles).
  • Work with Quality Department to respond to customer quality complaints and engineering changes.
  • Able to work any shift and weekends as required.
  • Meets all physical and environmental requirements.
  • Follows all prescribed safety regulations including the proper use of all required personal protective equipment.
  • Follows all Environmental Policy and Quality Policy guidelines.
  • Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition according to established Gibbs 7-S Guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management. 


To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education, knowledge, skills and abilities:

Education: Bachelor's degree from four-year College or university in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.


Experience: 5 years or more industrial machine controls experience.

Communication: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Math: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. 

Computer Skills: Highly skilled at programming and troubleshooting Allen Bradley PLCs and HMIs, and setting up IO communication utilizing Ethernet and Profibus. Must be proficient with PanelView, FactoryView ME, FactoryTalk, RSLogix 500, and Studio 5000.  Experience with Fanuc R30iA/R30iB controllers, Fanuc Material Handling Pro software, and ABB IRC5 controllers is preferred. Proficient with Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Computer Aided Design (CAD).

Other: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  Experience with automation integration and developing automation cell layout.  Formal training in automation integration and programming.  Training or experience with Ergonomics.  Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings such as casting, machining, and tool prints.  Willing to work in office environment and on the manufacturing floor.  Physically capable of sitting and standing for long periods, and climbing stairs and ladders. Willing to travel to customer facilities as needed.  Able to work any shift and weekends on relatively short notice as needed.
