The Automated Finishing Equipment Estimator develops accurate, timely and detailed automated finishing systems designs and cost estimates for the engineering, fabrication and installation of process equipment for automated finishing systems.  The Estimator will be responsible for accurate quantity surveys, preparation of subcontractor and vendor work scopes and quote analysis, and estimating the cost of self-perform work. Estimator will be a self-starter and work efficiently and must be able to meet critical deadlines and have the ability to work as part of a team.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Develop, as part of a team, full-scope cost estimates based on proposal documentation on a variety size process equipment projects ranging from $500k to $20M.
  2. Interpret and analyze conceptual project drawings and specifications, proposals and other documentation to estimate the fabrication of various process components including mechanical and electrical installations.
  3. Responsible for accurate, detailed take-off of quantities from conceptual project drawings and specifications.
  4. Develop detailed cost estimates for self-perform engineering, fabrication and installation work elements.
  5. Setup and maintain the estimating file and associated pursuit specific databases.
  6. Assist in developing the initial project execution and logistics plans and the project schedule.
  7. Identify, solicit and analyze subcontractor and vendor proposals.
  8. Complete peer review of takeoffs and cost estimates prepared by estimating staff.
  9. Assist with the maintenance of estimating databases.
  10. Assist with the procurement of major materials and subcontracts on successful pursuits.
  11. Perform research for means and methods, materials, equipment, costs and construction techniques and services to increase competitiveness.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Requirements:

This job is performed both in the office and in the field. Field work requires experience and confidence working in and around heavy industrial equipment, systems and conditions is required. Activities and responsibilities require frequent sitting (often working on a computer), frequent driving, flying, walking, standing, light lifting, bending, and reaching. Due to computer usage, there may be repetitive motions of the hands and wrists.

Required Education:, Experience, and Training

  1. Education and/or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related experience or similar degree.
  2. Minimum of 7 years of experience in estimating of projects in the discipline


Requisite Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Computer knowledge and efficiency, including Microsoft Office products [Word, Excel, PowerPoint] and HCSS Estimating/Engineering Software: AutoCAD, On Screen Takeoff or similar.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency with all Estimating processes including: Equipment Buy/Sell analysis, Sub vs Self Perform analysis, Holding Accounts, Quote System, Estimate closeout procedure, etc.
  3. Capability to manage an entire estimate of a moderate sized project under the supervision of a Systems Engineer or Estimating and Design Manager.
  4. Mentor and train Systems Engineers.
  5. Self-starter with the ability to work independently and within a team.
  6. Coordinate closely with Systems Engineer to produce quantity takeoffs for use in preparing estimates.
  7. Understands cost based risk analysis.
  8. Ability to manage and direct junior estimating staff assigned to the pursuit and mentor a team.
  9. Effective written and verbal communication skills.
